Movie Description In this Victorian-era Merchant/Ivory adaptation of an H.E. Bates' novel, a young woman searching for the lover who abandoned her collapses and gives birth to a stillborn child. Taken in by a local farmer with three grown sons, each of whom courts her, she eventually marries the youngest, but their lives turn tragic when her former lover returns.
Synopsis In 19th century England, a young, innocent woman named Bella has just been seduced and abandoned. Pregnant from the encounter, and all alone, she searches for the man who ruined her. Her tragic journey through the wind and rain ends when she loses her baby -- and finds a home with a sympathetic couple. But each of the couple's three sons falls in love with Bella, setting off a fierce rivalry that finally destroys the fabric of the clan.
