Synopsis In 1978, lawyer Bob Rowe brutally murdered his wife and three children. After several years in an institution for the criminally insane, Rowe was released, and he remarried and had a daughter. His second wife, Colleen, was aware of his terrible past, but loved and trusted him nonetheless. Meanwhile, friends of Rowe's deceased first wife were incredulous and angry that Rowe had found a new life. In this account, New York Times journalist Julie Salamon documents Colleen's attempts to make peace with the friends of Rowe's first wife after Bob's death in 1997. In the process, Salamon creates a provocative exploration of the boundaries of forgiveness.

Industry Reviews "[Salamon's] book is important not only for its lessons on the ravages of mental illness but for its ability to overturn our assumptions about evil, innocence, guilt and compassion." Wall Street Journal (03/30/2001)
"Despite Salamon's subtitle (which bears the mark of the marketing division, if you ask me), this is not a tale of redemption but an enigmatic tragedy, fundamentally unknown and unknowable." Salon - Andrew O'Hehir (04/03/2001)
"...[M]esmerizing.... In prose so simple and unadorned it sometimes seems lifted from a children's book, Salamon recounts the murders and their seemingly neverending aftermath..." Chicago Tribune - Robert Kaiser (07/15/2001)
"A suspenseful, well-researched account....A perturbing read that prods us to ponder guilt and innocence from new perspectives." Kirkus Reviews (02/01/2001)
