Album Notes
EXPRESSO 2222 is the sound of a joyous homecoming. Gilberto Gil had spent the previous two years in political exile in England, and this 1972 album was his first release after returning. Its percolating grooves, full-band arrangements, and effervescent feeling stand in stark contrast to the melancholy, acoustic sparseness of his preceding self-titled album. Bits of the rock influences he picked up in London are brought to bear here within the context of more traditionally Brazilian styles for a rich stylistic mix.
