Album Notes Full performer name: Milt Jackson/The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Milt Jackson/The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra includes: Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Jeff Clayton (alto saxophone, flute, clarinet); John Clayton (bass); Jeff Hamilton (drums); Ricky Woodard, Charles Owens (tenor saxophone); "Snooky" Young, Oscar Brashear (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); Bill Cunliffe (piano). Along with legends like Lionel Hampton and Bobby Hutcherson, Milt Jackson is one of the grand old masters of the jazz vibraphone. As such, he's gone through more phases and styles than you can shake a stick at, but in his later career he's seldom been in the company of a big band, let alone one this solidly swinging. Led by bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton (as well as Jeff Clayton on alto sax), the Clayton-Hamilton band is one that keeps as watchful an eye on the rhythm as on the multitude of horns. Accordingly, Jackson's precise, bop-oriented vibes work is supported/enhanced by an especially impressive amount of groove. Milt and company work their way through a program that mixes classics (Monk's "Evidence," Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You") with Jackson originals, and the Clayton-Hamilton proves equally adept at playing it straight ("SInce I Fell For You") and mixing it up in Monkish fashion (the aforementioned "Evidence"). Jackson's subtle but commanding solos lead the way throughout.
