Album Notes The Decca label has assembled a notable sampling of the output of J.S. Bach that ranges through orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. And while space necessitates the omission of works that may be considered essential, this two-CD set includes many well-known selections expertly performed throughout. The collection opens with the familiar strains of the Toccata in D minor, heard here in a transcription by Leopold Stokowski and in a vigorous performance by Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Bach's standing as the paragon of Baroque music is well supported by the brilliance of the works offered here. Excerpts from masterworks such as the Brandenburg Concertos, the Cello Suites, the St. Matthew Passion, and the Goldberg Variations serve as a testament to the composer's genius. Outstanding performances by artists such as Neville Marriner, András Schiff, and János Starker contribute to making ESSENTIAL BACH a fine introduction to a musical titan.
