Synopsis At birth, a girl named Ella is given the gift of obedience by a fairy. The fairy thinks she is doing a good deed because all children should be obedient, but she doesn't realize that her gift is really a curse because now Ella has no choice but to follow every command given to her. As Ella grows up, the gift becomes more and more of a burden and places her, and those she loves, in dangerous situations. Because the fairy refuses to rescind her gift, Ella struggles to find a way to break the spell herself., In this novel based on the story of Cinderella, Ella struggles against the childhood curse that forces her to obey any order given to her.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "That fool of a fairy Lucinda did not intend to lay a curse on me."
Industry Reviews "Levine leaves the familiar motifs intact--wicked stepmother, glass slipper, midnight curfew at the ball--but by establishing an easy, playful friendship between Ella and the prince which blossoms gradually into love, she offers readers with feminist sensibilities the assurance that life with Charmont (the prince you want to bring home to mother) will in fact be happy, ever after." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books - Elizabeth Bush (05/19/1997)
"This refreshing take on one of the world's most popular fairy tales preserves the spirit of the original but adds plenty of humorous twists and a spunky, intelligent female lead." Brophy
