Synopsis
A picture book biography of the often lonely and painful childhood of Eleanor Roosevelt. Shy and awkward, Eleanor was an obvious disappointment to her mother but was well-loved by her father who, unfortunately, was unreliable and eventually left the family. Raised primarily by her Grandmother Hall, Eleanor finally found self-confidence when she was sent to boarding school in England. This book ends with her graduation from that school and includes an afterword that tells of Eleanor's many achievements as a First Lady and a humanitarian. Illustrated with color paintings., Presents the childhood of Eleanor Roosevelt, who married a president of the United States and became known as a great humanitarian.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "From the beginning the baby was a disappointment to her mother. She was born red and wrinkled, an ugly little thing. And she was not a boy."

Industry Reviews
"The image of plain Eleanor being fitted with her first beautiful dress in an indelible one. Readers will be moved by the unfairness of her early life and rejoice when she finds her place in the world."
Kirkus Reviews - None Given (08/15/1996)

"To underscore Roosevelt's emotional isolation, Cooney has chosen to place her protagonist at the edges or in the backgrounds of her pictures, which brilliantly re-create the look of a late 19th century world that combined privilege and poverty. Cooney has been creating extraordinary books for children for 56 years; 'Eleanor' is among her best."
Los Angeles Times Book Review - Michael Cart (10/06/1996)

"This revealing portrait of a remarkable woman is a picture-biography of the highest order."
Smithsonian - Kathleen Burke (11/19/1996)

"Ms. Cooney's tale is affecting; any child will find it easy to relate to this classic account of an ugly duckling, as Eleanor becomes a teen-ager and gains confidence under the tutelage of an attentive boarding school headmistress."
New York Times Book Review - Leslie Bennetts (12/08/1996)
