Details

Synopsis Liz Dunn lives an Eleanor Rigby-ish life until a series of strange events jolts her out of her stagnant existence. A meteorite drops to earth almost at her feet. The baby she gave up for adoption 20 years ago--now a desperately sick man named Jeremy--comes back into her life. She begins working with the police on a mysterious case. She encounters the man who fathered Jeremy. And, as the eminently logical result of all this mayhem, Liz gets thrown in jail. In Douglas Coupland's novel, for every dire twist of the plot, a silver lining reveals itself--thanks to his low-key, indomitable, and very appealing heroine.

Publisher's Notes
First Line: "I had always thought that a person born blind and given sight later on in life through the miracles of modern medicine would feel newborn."
Industry Reviews "extremely funny yet quite moving (and even plausible): could be one of the first great novels of the new century." Kirkus (10/15/2004)
"Liz Dennis fat, lonely and has no friends. That sounds harsh, but Coupland faces unpleasant facts head on in this poignant, funny, intrepidly offbeat new novel....[A] clever, inspired, brilliantly strange tale." Publishers Weekly (11/15/2004)
