Alto saxophonist and big band leader Ed Palermo has shown a dedication to inventive, restless musicianship since the 1980s, and his love for other innovators, such as Frank Zappa, informs his work. With 2009's EDDY LOVES FRANK, Palermo delivers his third, and most ambitious, treatment of Franz Zappa's work. Drawing on obscure Zappa gems such as "Night School" and "Regyptian Strut," Palermo writes wildly intricate arrangements (of songs that were already plenty intricate) for his 16-piece band. Dynamite solos from Palermo and others push the already high excitement level higher.
Industry Reviews Saxophonist/arranger Ed Palermo has devoted substantial time and effort to exposing Zappa's compositional acumen by transposing his work to big band, where Zappa's genius can be examined freshly in another context.
