Recording information: Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia (2004); Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California (2004). Even before the release of Graham Colton Band's major-label debut, the group made a name for itself touring with John Mayer, Counting Crows, and Guster. There are elements of all these bands' music on DRIVE, but the Dallas-based quintet often trumps the competition with youthful energy and incisive songwriting. Sounding at times like an alternative-rock version of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Colton and crew deliver a jangly guitar-driven album that has all the sweet pop hooks of Toad the Wet Sprocket, but with a meaty rhythmic drive and a rural twang that exposes the ensemble's Texas roots. Brendan O'Brien's vibrant production recalls his rootsy work with Train and the Black Crowes, and reinforces the band's sonic kick. An unusually accomplished first record by any measure, DRIVE showcases catchy pop songs imbued with authentic rock spirit.
