After scoring at platinum levels with 1996's HARLEM WORLD and its impossible-to-avoid hit single "Feels So Good," Mase continued to wax poetic about girls, glam, and his own fame on his 1999 sophomore effort. Bad Boy's most upbeat MC switches up the landscape a bit on DOUBLE UP, perhaps an attempt to emerge from Puffy's significant shadow, providing a sort of electronic worldbeat backdrop on "Stay Out of My Way" and a space-rock Gary Numan interpolation on "No Matter What." However, his wide-eyed, unadorned rhymestyle delivered in a careless, languorious drawl remains, making DOUBLE UP a fitting follow-up.
