Album Notes Personnel: Robert Cray (vocals, guitar); David Sanborn (alto saxophone); Peter Boe (keyboards); Richard Cousins (bass); David Olson (drums); The Memphis Horns. Recorded at Sunset Sound and Sunnyside Studios, Los Angeles, California. After winning a Grammy with 1986's STRONG PERSUADER, Robert Cray returned with 1988's DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, a follow-up that found him once again working with The Memphis Horns. Cray's favorite topics continued to be the intricacies of relationships whether neglect ("Don't You Even Care"), a friend's betrayal ("I Can't Go Home") or an inevitable break-up ("At Last"). Although the production on DARK sands down some of Cray's rougher edges, his soulful singing style and the crackling twang of his guitar still remain a constant on songs such as "Night Patrol" and "Across The Line." This smoother-edged blues approach is best represented by "Acting This Way," featuring a by-the-numbers David Sanborn sax solo, and a cooly reassuring title track that ended up having its video go into regular rotation on VH-1.
