Album Notes Fantomas: Mike Patton (vocals); Buzz "King Buzzo" Osborne (guitar); Trevor Dunn (bass); Dave Lombardo (percussion). Recorded in Los Angeles, California, 2003. Consisting of one track that clocks in at just over 74 minutes, DELIRIUM CORDIA is the third studio release by Fantomas, the avant-metal supergroup formed by vocalist Mike Patton (ex-Faith No More, Mr. Bungle), guitarist Buzz Osborne (Melvins), bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), and drummer Dave Lombardo (Slayer). Renowned for their chaotic bursts of noise and penchant for eerie ambience, Patton and company incorporate both into this extended piece, which seems to follow the nightmares and hallucinations of a hospital patient drifting in and out of sleep, consciousness, and possibly even death. From slowly building drones and abrupt rhythmic freak-outs to monk-like chanting and water flowing, DELIRIUM CORDIA shifts from one movement to another, at times settling briefly on a quiet, almost serene passage before morphing into another dreamscape. It's evident here that Patton has drawn from his collaborations with eclectic composer John Zorn and his Naked City project, with much of the music tipping its hat to the largely ambient ABSINTHE album. Listening to DELIRIUM CORDIA is like watching a David Lynch film with your eyes closed; what you hear but don't see is inarguably bizarre yet oddly fascinating. Note: Faint-of-heart listeners may want to avoid looking at the surgery-themed booklet.
Industry Reviews 3 stars out of 5 - ...[Incorporates] noise rock, free-form jazz, chamber music, klezmer, and spooky piano lines straight out of a HALLOWEEN movie....CORDIA demands repeated listens, if only to hear the freakish wonder that is Mike Patton's voice... Rolling Stone (01/22/2004)
