Conjunto is a lively dance music that originated in the borderlands of Texas and Northern Mexico. Conjunto Primavera is one of the longest standing practitioners of this stylistic vein (the band formed in 1978), and their line-up features the traditional conjunto instrumentation of accordion, bass, drums, and bajo sexto (a bassier, 12-string guitar), augmented by horns, auxiliary percussion, and occasional strings.
2004's DEJANDO HUELLA puts a spin on the genre's traditions by emphasizing smoother, more romantic material. Passionate, emotive vocals characterize ballads like "Y Que Mi Importa" (which vaguely resembles a Tex-Mex Michael Bolton number), and the band flirts with mainstream pop now and then with the likes of "Actos de un Tonto." But diehard fans needn't fear, because the band is still steeped in classic conjunto: working-class ranchera forms and slowed or double-timed waltz and polka beats. There are plenty of soaring vocals, rich harmonies, fluttering horn and accordion fills, and kick-up-your-heels rhythms on cuts like "De Nuevo a Tu Lado" and "Vete Con a Mi Amor." DEJANDO HUELLA is a satisfying disc for both old-school conjunto fans and newcomers weaned on contemporary Tex-Mex pop.
