Some longtime fans of The Dentists initially expressed disappointment in the band's final release, 1995's DEEP SIX, citing the more aggressive production by Sonic Youth cohort Wharton Tiers as the cause of their dissatisfaction. However, a balanced listen reveals that Tiers merely accentuates elements that had been in the band's music all along. After a full decade of indie releases that included classic singles like "Strawberries Are Growing in My Garden" and "Outside Your Inside," the Dentists were not about to start kowtowing to more mainstream musical palates. Instead, the band's trademark blend of '60s-style psychedelic pop, jangly postpunk, and distinctive vocal stylings (courtesy of Mick Murphy) is subtly made a hair more aggressive, so that songs like "Kick Start My Body" and "My Heart is Like a Town You Moved Away From" have the power and crunch of SELL OUT-era Who.
