Synopsis
This combination of old-fashioned detective novel, Gothic thriller, and dark fantasy was a 1998 Nebula Award nominee. It takes place several generations after THE ELEMENT OF FIRE. In Vienne, a city similar to 19th-century Paris except that magic is real, Nicholas Valiarde leads a double life--as a wealthy art dealer and a thief. But his real passion lies in avenging his mentor, who was framed for murder by the ruthless Count Montesq and subsequently executed. Utilizing a small group of friends, Nicholas tracks the movements of Montesq. His actions inadvertently entangle him in the affairs of a corrupt medium, Doctor Octave, and Octave's master, a necromancer whose brutal acts appear to mimic those of a sorcerer dead over 200 years ago.
