While the tale is set at Francis's preferred locale--the racetrack--this time he steps behind the racing scene, and frames the story around Max Moreton, a young chef. The day before Moreton is to cater a luncheon at the track, he has a dinner party go terribly awry due to a strange bout of food poisoning. Then the luncheon itself is destroyed by a bomb attack. Moreton realizes that he is at the center of some truly sordid plans, and becomes determined to catch the perpetrator.
