Set in the 1920s, the film chronicles the tale of Amelia Peazant, a young woman who travels from New York to visit her family on one of the Sea Islands off the Carolina coast. Raised in the Gullah culture, Amelia seeks to hear the old stories and record the dramatic history of her family, from their transport to America as slaves in the early 19th century to their rich family life in the early 20th.
