Movie Description A telephone operator in Mexico City leads a monotonous life uplifted only by Danzon dancing with her long-time partner Carmello at the local ballroom. When he disappears, she searches for him and in the process finds herself emancipated from her mediocre dependency on "Danzon."
Synopsis Julia, a single mother who works in an unsatisfying job as a switchboard operator, expresses herself only through danzon, a traditional Cuban ballroom dance. When Carmelo, her dance partner for over five years, suddenly disappears, Julia finds that much of her pleasure in danzon goes with him. Though she knew Carmelo only on the ballroom floor, Julia journeys to the seaport town of Vera Cruz in an attempt to find him and to recover the missing part of her life.
There, in a world unlike any she has known, she encounters sailors and prostitutes and befriends them -- especially Susy, a good-hearted transvestite singer who tries to help her locate Carmelo. To her surprise, Julia's quest leads to an unexpected romance and to self-discovery.
Industry Reviews "...DANZON is suffused with an uninsistent (and uncloying) sweetness....DANZON's journey teaches its heroine new steps but never devalues the basic rhythms of the life she returns to..." Film Comment - Kathleen Murphy (11/01/1991)
"...DANZON has strong feminist themes and lessons in female bonding to offer. But they couldn't be more gracefully understated or, at times, charming..." Chicago Sun-Times - Lloyd Sachs (02/26/1993)
