Album Notes Personnel: Dan Bern (vocals, guitar, cello, harmonica, organ); Josh Zawaduk (vocals, accordion, organ); Gidget (vocals); Marshall Thompson (keyboards); Jennifer Condos (bass); Gary Mallaber (drums); Chuck Plotkin (percussion). Engineers: Micajah Ryan, Mouse Johnson, Dean Restum. On his first album, New Jersey-based singer/songwriter Dan Bern brings a literate, occasionally smart-alecky tone to acoustic roots rock. "Marilyn" imagines how Miss Monroe's life might have been different if she'd married erotic novelist Henry Miller instead of playwright Arthur Miller. The original "Jerusalem" owes something to the William Blake poem of the same title. But Bern doesn't fall into any too-smart-for-his-own-good traps. Sympathetically produced by Springsteen associate Chuck Plotkin, DAN BERN is a loose, rollicking debut with a relaxed freshness that's sometimes missing from the sometimes self-serious roots-rock genre. Even straightforward songs like "Go to Sleep" and "I'm Not the Guy" keep well away from sanctimony, whereas songs like the biting "Too Old to Die Young" recall the caustic wit of Loudon Wainwright III, obviously one of Bern's big influences.
