Despite the popularity they've achieved, the Geto Boys don't have pop crossover on their minds. They're a fiercely politicized lot, and their main focus on DA GOOD DA BAD DA UGLY, as on their earlier works, is ghetto life and the plight of their fellow African-Americans. Over simple but infectious hardcore beats and the occasional orchestral sample (they're not above a nod to melody), the Geto Boys lay it down with a minimum of fuss and plenty of force. While the typical gangsta issues are addressed on tunes like "Gangsta (Put Me Down)" and the self-explanatory "Gun in My Mouth," DA GOOD DA BAD also looks at more complex racial and social issues. No matter how political things get though, the Geto Boys never lose sight of the essentials: rhymes and beats.
