Album Notes
Personnel: Edward Ka-Spel (keyboards, music box); Ryan Moore (guitar, bass, drums, percussion); Elke (keyboards, percussion); Calyxx (babyphone).
Commissioned to record an ambient album for Staalplaat's Korm Plastics sublabel, Legendary Pink Dots frontman Edward Ka-Spel recruited his wife Elke, son Calyxx, and the various ghosts cohabiting the Ka-Spel residence. LPD bassist Ryan Moore sat in on the session, lending a percussive presence. The resulting record, first released in 1996 and since reissued on CD in 2000, takes its title from an anagram of "Edward and Elke," and the gentle atmosphere of its two sidelong tracks from the uneasy peace of domestic life.
"Decay" projects harmony in a haunted homestead. Moore's pattering beats draw the Ka-Spels' vaporous keyboard and music box sounds into a collapsing vortex of pastel-hued psychedelia. Everyday sounds are lost and found in the eddy, while spirit voices whisper, whoosh, and whistle all around. "DNA" is a decidedly creepier affair. The track begins with an understated keyboard melody and the pleasant tinkle of wind chimes. But crackling noises and electronic effects soon suffuse the soundscape, turning it inside out and engulfing Calyxx's infant coo within the eerie atmospherics. It's disconcerting enough to make one consider calling in a medium. Haven't the Ka-Spels seen POLTERGEIST?
