Synopsis
Based on lectures given by Chogyam Trungpa in 1970 and 1971, this is a fascinating discourse about the potential pitfalls that mental confusion can create in the quest for spiritual enlightenment and self-discovery. He writes about how, in the process of learning to focus the mind in an effort to achieve spiritual enlightenment, the voice of the ego constantly seeks reassurance, comfort, and distraction. Despite even sincere efforts to become a better person, the struggle itself can have the opposite effect, as the ego rationalizes or distorts the process for its own personal sense of comfort and selfish ends. Trungpa (who founded the first Buddhist University in America) explains that meditation should be seen not as a vehicle for the ego to escape or shut down the outside world, but rather as a way to transcend the self altogether and be at peace in a complex world. These are compelling instructions and advice from a master about how to follow a spiritual path without veering off course.
