Movie Description After surviving a head-on car collision that triggers a raw sexual awakening, a bored, nihilistic television producer assembles a following of other bored, death-obsessed nihilists who seek kinky thrills by investigating the ostensible erotic basis of the twisted metal, skid marks, and adrenaline rushes of auto smash-ups. Based on the eponymous novel by J. G. Ballard. The film's controversial thesis won accolades from some (a Cannes Special Prize) and censure from others. Available in rated and unrated versions.
Synopsis This dark, moody, erotically-charged film examines the theme of sexual fetishes, and their impact on one's life.
Philandering husband James Ballard has been seriously injured in a car crash. But after bonding with Helen, the woman in the other vehicle, the two begin a sexual relationship.
Their lives are further altered after meeting kinky hospital worker Vaughn. Vaughn runs a secret club that re-enacts (to the minutest details) famous car crashes, such as the one that killed James Dean. Lovemaking between the club members follows the re-creation.
The combination of kinky sex and danger creates an unusual fetish for Vaughn, Helen, James, his wife, and others in their circle. And soon, the fetish leads to obsession for many involved...
Film Notes The film won an award for "originality, audacity and daring" at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.
Co-produced by Alliance Communications and the Movie Network.
Color by DeLuxe.
Additional cast: Peter MacNeil (Colin Seagrave).
Industry Reviews "...Cronenberg is a master of creating and sustaining a mood of insinuating cool and dark allure..." Variety - Todd McCarthy
4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] superbly acted ensemble piece....It retains a driving force." Total Film - Nev Pierce (09/01/2006)
