Album Notes Issued in 2008, COUPLES makes good on the promise of the Long Blondes' debut, SOMEONE TO DRIVE ME HOME, presenting another round of energetic Britpop. While HOME benefited from production work by Steve Mackey (formerly of Pulp), this outing shimmers with an electro sheen provided by renowned DJ Erol Alkan, a point made immediately apparent on the dynamic, synth-heavy opening track, "Century." Other songs, particularly the catchy title tune and the propulsive "I Like the Boys," focus more on a guitar-based pop sound, with sassy vocalist Kate Jackson in fine form throughout the album. Like a 21st-century U.K. counterpart to Blondie, the Long Blondes mix adventurousness with just enough accessibility, resulting in a fun, fascinating record.
Industry Reviews 4 stars out of 5 -- [A] sleek, sexy affair....Flirtations with a darker sound and Donna Summer-style disco emerge...
4 stars out of 5 -- The sassy synthpop of 'Century' is full of techno flourishes and swooning vocals as if the girl singers had taken over The Human League...
3 stars out of 5 -- Their forays into electronica work best: 'Century' is a dancefloor stomper; 'Round The Hairpin' oozes synthesized menace.
4 stars out of 5 -- Lyrically, they're still wickedly sharp, but there's new emotional heart...
