Industry Reviews This is a wonderful book! I am planning to give it to friends and foes, especially those who support the irrevocable penalty of death. As the title states, this volume is about those large numbers of offenders who are brought into our criminal justice system, and are then wrongfully convicted. The authors estimate that even if the criminal justice system were 99.5 percent accurate for the eight serious index offenses, there are at least 10,000 wrongful convictions in America a year. The authors present some fascinating case studies to support their emphasis on the criminal in criminal justice decision making.

In six clearly written chapters the authors examine the reality of unjust incarceration. They define the term 'convicted innocents' and explore a range of horrors, including a finding of innocence that did not result in immediate release from prison; several important cases involving innocents (e.g., the Scottsboro boys, the Lindbergh baby kidnapping, and the John Demjanjuk case of mistaken identity); missteps in the criminal justice system that make it possible to find some innocent people guilty; problems of eyewitness identification; and the role of false confessions in the conviction of the innocent. . . . For anyone concerned about justice; highly recommended for public and university libraries.
