This box set contains the 16 studio albums that Sinatra recorded for Capitol from 1953 to 1962. The set comes with a 96 page hardbound book with rare photos, liner notes for each disc and an extensive historical overview of Sinatra's career by Will Friedwald. Also included in this set is the TONE POEMS LP (1957) on which Sinatra served as conductor only.

Samplers and anthologies be damned. If you're going to document what was one of the most important periods in the career of popular song's prime ambassador, you've got to include everything. That's just what CONCEPTS does. This 16-disc set covers Sinatra's Capitol period (1953-1962), commonly regarded as the singer's golden period. One of the most attractive aspects of this package, aside from the bonus tracks and well-written, informative booklet, is the fact that each original album is represented with its track order intact on a single disc, giving the listener a real feel for these releases' individual import.
On such albums as COME DANCE WITH ME and COME FLY WITH ME, Sinatra takes full advantage of arranger Billy May's big band chops, laying down tunes that virtually define the term "swing": jazzy and propulsive, but never at a loss for cool. In the sophisticated, spectral arrangements of Nelson Riddle, Sinatra found the perfect vehicle with which to deliver his "saloon songs," essentially a kind of blend of jazzy blues and art song, given a modern chamber feel by Riddle's unique use of strings and woodwinds. IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS and SINGS FOR ONLY THE LONELY are the sacred texts of this style, a thread Gordon Jenkins was able to follow expertly on his orchestrations for NO ONE CARES. As a bonus, the long out-of-print SINATRA CONDUCTS TONE POEMS OF COLOR is resurrected here, giving a rare glimpse of Sinatra wielding the baton over the abstract instrumental musings of Riddle, Jenkins, May and others. If you want to understand American popular music of the mid-20th Century, CONCEPTS is an inescapable necessity.
