Album Notes
Personnel: Leroy Carr (vocals, piano); Scrapper Blackwell (guitar).
Recorded in Chicago, Illinois in 1930 & 1931 and New York, New York in 1932.
From the success of his very first single, 1928's classic "How Long, How Long Blues," Nashville-born, Indianapolis-bred pianist Leroy Carr epitomized the blues' northward migration from rural desperation to urban sophistication. Carr was a city boy through and through, from his taste in clothes to his jail time as a Prohibition-era bootlegger.
His relaxed but taut playing and singing style struck a chord with black audiences of the '30s, making him one of the biggest and most influential bluesmen of his time, until his early death from alcoholism in 1935 at the age of 30. This 22-track compilation--the third in a six-volume series collecting all of the pianist's recordings, most of them in the company of guitarist "Scrapper" Blackwell, in chronological order--shows just how sophisticated Carr had become several years into his professional career.
