Though limited by the relatively small number of recordings Duke Ellington made for Verve Records during his career, the DUKE ELLINGTON AND FRIENDS edition of Verve's early-'90s COMPACT JAZZ series of reissues is inarguably one of the series' best. Opening with Ella Fitzgerald's legendary rendition of "Take the A Train" (also available on the Fitzgerald/Ellington edition of COMPACT JAZZ), the 56-minute, 11-track disc moves through a number of small-group recordings made under the names of Ellington sidemen like tenor Ben Webster and alto Johnny Hodges, as well as the underrated singer Al Hibbler, whose "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart" is a career highlight. The disc also includes big band versions of Ellington classics like "Satin Doll" and Prelude to a Kiss," many of which were recorded at Verve founder Norman Granz's legendary Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts.
