"Down and going under, rather than up and coming, is [Beckett's] favorite orientation. He offers the underside, rather than the chesty side, of experience. His defeated heroes belong to vaudeville rather than to the formal literary tradition. But it is not exactly vaudeville either, as Bert Lahr discovered in Waiting for Godot, and Buster Keaton in Beckett's one film.
