Synopsis The Alcohoholics Anonymous 12-step guide to recovery has become the bedrock of many addiction recovery groups, including DA (Debtors Anonymous), CODA (Co-Dependents Anonymous), and ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics). An issue which often arises with non-alcoholic groups is that they often rely on AA's alcohol-centric version of the steps, and then have to mentally change the alcohol references to reflect their own issues. This need no longer be an issue for co-dependents in recovery, thanks to Melody Beattie (author of CO-DEPENDENT NO MORE), who re-examines each step in a codependent context. As with the AA "big book," there are lots of personal stories about abuse and alienation by those who share how they suffered in co-dependent relationships and how the steps helped them learn to let unpleasant emotions come and go without resorting to negative behavior and relapses. Beattie has provided a great service to recovering co-dependents, who now have a "big book" of their own.
