CITI MOVEMENT is divided into three movements: "Cityscape," "Transatlantic Echoes" and "Some Present Moments of the Future" respectively. Written by Wynton Marsalis for Griot New York, a modern ballet choreographed by Garth Fagan, the three-part composition uses jazz to render the history and feeling of a city, and the emotional references connected to styles and rhythmic grooves. Building upon the grandeur of Duke Ellington's writing, and the obtuseness of Charles Mingus' work, CITI MOVEMENT is rich in both urban Americana and jazz history. In addition, this music bathes itself in tonal humor and irony, as well as rhythmical. textural and timbral variety. Constantly shifting, and ever evolving, CITI MOVEMENT evokes the mood and frenetic character of New York City with grace and elegance. Finally, and unsurprisingly, Marsalis' septet performs this music with great poise and resolution, and tight, well-rehearsed fervor.
