This is part of Hat Hut's Hat Jazz series.
An unusual project for Stockhausen-influenced composer Anthony Braxton, CHARLIE PARKER PROJECT 1993 consists of two discs--one live, one studio--of Charlie Parker compositions, plus two other bebop classics, Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia" and Miles Davis' "Sippin' at Bells." Braxton re-interprets these pieces after his own style, often radically reconstructing the familiar melodies into startlingly new and fascinating shapes.
Interestingly, the live and studio discs consist largely of the same material, giving the listener the opportunity to see how Braxton shapes his group's performances to the different environments. Over the decades, some jazz purists have sniffed that what Anthony Braxton is doing cannot truly be considered jazz. CHARLIE PARKER PROJECT 1993 shows just how wrong they are.

Industry Reviews
Ranked #4 in the Village Voice's Best Jazz Discs of '95 - ...The moldy Braxton controversy fades before these sextet performances--vital, good humored, very savvy, never pious...
Village Voice (01/16/1996)

4 stars out of 5 - [O]ne of Braxton's best repertory projects, brimming with both daring recastings of Parker and Bird-associated compositions and relatively straight-up takes emphasizing blazing blowing.

...Braxton's true to Parker's spirit in daring to try new directions. He's also true to himself....His study and spin on the Parker Songbook comes from a painstakingly researched and strongly felt modernist perspective...
JazzTimes (02/01/1996)

4 Stars - Very Good - ...Braxton & co. often make mischief of Bird without sounding flippant, playing it crooked as well as `straight'....In Braxton's hands, thankfully, Charlie Parker's music is birdseed in the best sense: namely, source material for further birdflights into uncharted skies. After all, Bird's music was meant to be messed with.
