Album Notes The Benzedrine Monks Of Santo Domonica: Brother Roberto de Waynez, Brother Martini de Que, Brother Dominicki de Ramon, Brother Ricardo de Foosi, Brother Baldini de Croy, Brother Bubbini de Troit, Brother Guido de Sandmandoni. Recorded at The Historic Monastery de Santo & Johnny, Santo Domonica, California. Includes liner notes by Friar Irwin Chusid. Somewhere in the stately recesses of the cloister of the Monasterio de Santo Dominica, in that sacred place where the sun don't shine, a cluster of brown-hooded homies sing for their supper. The devotion of the Benzedrine monks--praying as they do seven times a day to St. Buddy of Holly and St. Bill of Haley--has made them docile and sleepy after all these centuries, which is probably why they allowed the archivists from Rhino Records to document their dementia on CHANTMANIA. Inspired by the success of CHANT, CHANTMANIA gives new meaning to the term wretched excess. Is there nothing more sacred than the church echo setting on a Lexicon digital reverb? Apparently not, because for the Benzedrine Monks, bathed as they are in the eerie glow of modern technology, rock standards such as "(Theme From) The Monkees," "We Will Rock You," "Losing My Religion," "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" are instantly transformed into Gregorian surf music. With the release of CHANTMANIA, deceased members of early music chorales will have to be removed from their crypts and mounted on rotisserie spits, so that they may henceforth brown evenly on all sides while spinning in their graves. E Pluribus Doowop, man.
