Greek new age keyboard god Yanni turns out spirals of lush piano and synthesizer on CHAMELEON DAYS that rival those of his American counterpart John Tesh (who's thanked in the album's liner notes). The '90s firmly cemented Yanni's position as an icon of instrumental pop music, but as early as this 1988 recording, he had all the basic elements of his smooth, romantic style in place. CHAMELEON DAYS is actually quite the D.I.Y. effort. Aside from the percussive contributions of Charlie Adams, this is completely Yanni's show, as he performs everything himself on keyboards, recorded in his own digital 24-track home studio. Though the more fully orchestrated splendor of his later efforts is only hinted at here, the musical scope of this album does not lack for grandness, as many of the themes turn from introspective to anthemic. CHAMELEON DAYS provided a template for Yanni's subsequent, more fully fleshed-out work.
