Album Notes Personnel: Steve Swallow (bass, synthesizer); Ida Kavafian (violin); Ik-Hwan Bae (viola); Fred Sherry (cello); Larry Willis (piano); Carla Bley (organ, synthesizer); Hiram Bullock (guitar); Victor Lewis (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Recorded at Grog Kill Studio, Willow, New York in the winter of 1986-87. The Carla of this 1987 album's title is Carla Bley. She and Steve Swallow have worked together regularly over the years, first in her assorted musical projects and then in a personal relationship as well. They have also recorded a couple of duo albums, 1988's DUETS and 1993's GO TOGETHER in 1993. The ensemble for CARLA's eight compositions by the bass players is the same as on Bley's concurrent SEXTET album. This was her regular working band of the time, augmented here with a trio of string players. A warm sophistication pervades the proceedings, with Bley's organ swirling around the Swallow's electric bass, the piano of Larry Willis, and the guitar of Hiram Bullock. Swallow, who set aside the string bass to explore the possibilities of the electric bass guitar in the early '70s, has been a rich and inventive composer since the sixties. With the strings adding further color, CARLA is a fine starting point for those looking to explore his work.
