Album Notes
Personnel includes: Howlin' Wolf (vocals, harmonica); Willie Johnson (guitar); William "Strutcher" Johnson (piano); Willie Steele (drums).
Recorded in Memphis for Sam Phillips' Sun label in 1952. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.
Not long before Memphis, Tennessee's Sun Records became famous as the home of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison, label founder Sam Phillips cut a number of sessions with blues greats, including these 12 Howlin' Wolf tracks from 1952. Backed by a trio of musicians all named Willie (or William, though none of them are the seemingly omni-present Willie Dixon), Wolf sinks his teeth into these rollicking tunes, applying his raspy voice and fierce harp playing with signature vigor.
The virtual antithesis of laid-back, rural blues, the music here is unhinged, street-smart, and downright aggressive, with Howlin' Wolf fully living up to his predatory namesake. Listening to these formidable songs, which include "Cadillac Daddy (Mr. Highway Man)," "Come Back Home," and "Everybody's In The Mood," it's clear why Phillips believed Wolf was his greatest discovery. And that's some staggeringly high praise, too, considering the talent Sun broke just a few years later.
