Album Notes Personnel includes: Merle Haggard, Bonnie Owens, Porter Wagoner, Johnny Counterfeit, Ray McDonald. Throughout his career, Merle Haggard has occasionally turned his attention from the secular material on which he built his fame, in order to focus on matters more transcendent. CABIN IN THE HILLS is one of two gospel albums Haggard released in 2001 (the other is TWO OLD FRIENDS, a collection of duets with Albert Brumley Jr.) and the fourth gospel album of Haggard's storied career. Like all of his albums of the new millennium, CABIN IN THE HILLS was recorded at Haggard's home studio with his touring band providing instrumental support. The result is a homey, relaxed setting that perfectly frames Haggard's craggy-but-gorgeous vocals. The material includes both gospel standards ("This World is Not My Home," performed as a duet with Porter Wagoner; "Farther Along," "Precious Lord Take My Hand") and material of a more recent vintage (Haggard's own compositions "What Will It Be Like" and "Lord Don't Give Up On Me," plus a splendid rendition of Iris Dement's "Shores of Jordan").
