First he wanted to be Dean Martin and now Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen) makes the cross-cultural leap, carrying on where the late Xavier Cugat left off. BUSTER'S SPANISH ROCKET SHIP finds Poindexter throwing some spice into his martini glass with a shot of horns and a few jiggers of potent percussion. Inspired by a 1996 Amazon riverboat tour he took, Poindexter enthusiastically dove into the Latin music idiom. His Banshees Of Blue and the Uptown Horns evolved into Buster's Spanish Rocketship and soon their set-list encompassed everything from Cuban merengue ("My First Sin") and Puerto Rican salsa ("Inez [Is Just A Big Rage Queen]") to a mix of Mexican conjunto and klezmer clarinet ("Downtown Dream"). Although Poindexter's accent is occasionally cringe-inducing, his take on everything from the Disneyfication of Manhattan ("All Wrong") to his homage to the Latina queen of burlesque dancing ("Iris Chacon") redeems any gringoisms that slip out.
