When her son discovers them together, he returns home and she fears he has revealed her burning secret.
Synopsis Set in post-WWI Austria, this film examines a young boy's emotional reaction to his mother's passionate, adulterous relationship.
Sonya, the wife of an older, haughty diplomat, has fallen out of love with her husband. But her life changes drastically after she brings her asthmatic son to a distant hospital for treatment. There, she takes an interest in a dashing Baron who was injured in battle. Although Sonya wants to have an affair with him, she hesitates, fearing it would cause her child pain if he discovered the truth. Furthermore, any indiscretions could destroy both her marriage, and her elite social standing.
Yet Sonya is so hungry for romance that she plunges into the affair -- and does indeed live to regret it...
