It is a fitting penance for Ethan Buckler--who, with his Slint bandmates and Tortoise, godfathered the very notion of brainy "post-rock"--that he should focus the rest of his career on King Kong, whose sole musical missions are to crack wise and shake rumps. On BUNCHA BEANS, the band's seventh full-length, the quartet stays in the same tried and true territory pioneered by dance-rock legends the B-52s. King Kong doesn't add much to the B-52s' formula--surfy guitars, bouncy beats, greasy Farfisas--but originality is not crucial when good times are to be had. This disc offers them in spades.
