Album Notes Bryn Terfel long ago established himself as the premier operatic bass-baritone of his generation. But what sets him apart from other celebrated singers is his deep appreciation of diverse musical genres and his willingness to explore them. Over the course of his distinguished career, he's achieved remarkable success in a variety of disparate styles with recordings devoted exclusively to operatic arias, lieder, art songs, folk music, and show tunes, all marked with the unmistakable stamp of his singular musicianship. BRYN finds the singer applying his rich voice to a selection of favorites, crowd-pleasing works that range across the musical spectrum. Showpiece arias by Bizet sit alongside traditional songs such as "Danny Boy" and "Shenandoah," as well as spirituals, romantic ballads, songs from films, and classical works. The album features contributions by guest artists such as superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli (in Bizet's 'Pearl Fishers' duet) and Norwegian soprano Sissel (in Schubert's "Ave Maria"). Terfel closes the satisfying program with a relaxed rendition of the Hoagy Carmichael/Johnny Mercer tune "Lazy Bones," accompanied by the jazzy fretwork of guitarist Martin Taylor.
