Synopsis Jake and Rosa, two children, form an unlikely friendship as they try to survive and understand the 1912 Bread and Roses strike of mill workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts., The 1912 "Bread and Roses" worker's strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts, is the backdrop for Katherine Paterson's middle-grade historical novel about a pair of children caught up in the event. Sixth-grader Rosa Serutti's mother and sister are strikers, and Jake Beale is a 13-year-old factory boy from a broken home. After meeting by chance in an alley, the two bond--and when Rosa is sent to a host family in Vermont for the duration of the strike, she takes Jake with her. This well-written, tender story is filled with fascinating history.
