The popular Body For Life program is here adapted for women by Dr. Pamela Peeke, who has a proven track record as the author of FIGHT FAT AFTER FORTY. To start, Peeke presents the innovative idea of measuring women's lives not in years but by four milestones: menstruation to first pregnancy; the reproductive years; perimenopause and menopause; and beyond menopause. Each milestone has its own needs, and each informs her other major theme, the "Mind, Mouth, Muscle triad," which can be restated as "attitude, nutrition, and exercise." Believing that the mental game is the key, Peeke provides "Power Mind Principles" to help readers set their goals and customize the plan. Like any good coach, Peeke is cajoling when necessary, as in her chapter "Bitch, Moan, and Whine, But Get the Job Done," but she cuts a little slack in other chapters, such as "Shoot for Progress Not Perfection." The BODY FOR LIFE FOR WOMEN plan is based on 12-week cycles, or "challenges," that are meant to be repeated, with modifications, throughout life. The nutrition component, designed with weight reduction and weight maintenance phases, includes recipes, food plans, and specific information on "smart eating." The exercise component uses equipment such as dumbbells, a stability ball, and a mat, with over 100 photographs illustrating the exercises. Peeke closes with a Q&A section that clarifies issues and addresses personal needs. Since women's bodies are so different from men's, BODY FOR LIFE FOR WOMEN was an excellent idea, offering the promise of a healthier life.
