While Franz Ferdinand's third full-length outing found the Scottish alt-rockers swapping some of their trademark post-punk bluster for sleek electro-dance beats, few would have predicted the band's next move would be a full on Jamaican dub-style remix of said album. But that is precisely what is offered on BLOOD, a studio-crafted companion to the band's early-2009 release, TONIGHT. Working with producer Dan Carey (whose production credits include reggae icons Lee "Scratch" Perry and Mad Professor), the group's meticulously placed rhythms and careening keyboards bounce vigorously in a virtual space. Daubed in washes of reverb and delay, and often stripped down to just a riff and a beat, the reinterpretations intensify the bass and inject a sense of space into the arrangements, recalling Mad Professor's similar turn of Massive Attack's classic album, PROTECTION.
