Synopsis An account of a slave rebellion aboard the Spanish ship Amistad in 1839. En route from Africa to the West Indies, the slaves aboard ship mutinied and killed most of the the crew, but were then deceived by the captain, who steered the ship to the American shore rather than back to Africa as he had been ordered by his captors. In the U.S., the slaves were imprisoned and became the subjects of one of the most elaborate and celebrated Supreme Court cases of the day, in which former U.S. president John Quincy Adams argued that they were, by rights, free men who could not be held captive or detained against their will.
