Personnel: Patti Rothberg (vocals, guitar, bass, background vocals); Matthew Sklar (string arranger); Avril Brown, Roger Mahadeen (violin); David Blinn (viola); Suzanne Bass (cello); Adam Chalk (Fender Rhodes, Hammond organ); Paul Chesik, Andy Hess (bass); Adrian Harpham (drums, tambourine, cymbals); Keith "Curtis" Hertell (tambourine, shaker); Little Dave Greenberg (programming).
Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York.
BETWEEN THE 1 & the 9 is a reference to the NYC subway lines near which Patti Rothberg busked for years in the early-1990s before securing a major label deal. The music on her 1996 debut splits the difference between the anti-folk air of the streets and the indie pop permeating major labels. Opening single "Inside," a minor MTV hit, sums up the bright-eyed singer sweetly; a supremely catchy tune, it tells a simple tale of tolerance without resorting to the preachy or overbearing.

Industry Reviews
...[Patti Rothberg couples] well-crafted songs and an appealingly grainy voice--think of a distaff Dylan... - Rating: B
Entertainment Weekly (04/12/1996)

4 Stars - Excellent - ...Rothberg sings with a grainy sweetness...and her delivery has all the intimacy of someone sharing secrets with a close friend....this accomplished debut album of acoustic folk-rock songs runs the gamut of streetwise tempos and emotions...
Q (10/01/1996)

...Rothberg's songs deserve...concentration. Given to self-revelation rather than self-remodeling, Rothberg appeals through honest intimacy as opposed to...cutesy narcissism...
Musician (07/01/1996)

6 - Reasonably Good - ...her lyrics convey a wholly unique personality, offering entertaining twists on such old standbys as bad boyfriends (`Looking For a Girl') and romantic revenge (`This One's Mine')...
Spin (05/01/1996)

3 Stars - Good - ...[takes] on the bohemian tradition in all its city-slick, streetwise, drifter glory. You can hear Joni and Janis and Rickie Lee and Cyndi....Rothberg invokes rainbows...and friends who'll be with her till the bitter end...but she sounds as if she's arching her eyebrows when she does so...
Rolling Stone (05/30/1996)
