With his husky voice, good looks, and a gift for dreamy melodies, Bebo Norman could have had a career as a romantic balladeer. Instead, the CCM artist's love songs are of the transcendent variety, and his passion is for justice, faith, and optimism in an often dark world. The songs on his fifth album are countrified pop songs with layered acoustic guitars and uplifting choruses, but the lyrics are not all sweetness and light. On the heart-broken ballad "Now That You're Gone," Norman addresses an absent lover, and the words of regret and longing could just as easily be aimed at a neglectful God in a war-torn world. That ambiguity is what keeps Norman's songs from falling into gospel cliches, and what intrigues his ardent fans.
