Album Notes BESIDES is a compilation of B-sides and live tracks. Included is a hidden CD-ROM track of the video for the song "Gee Angel." Initial pressings include a limited-edition bonus disc, featuring a complete live performance. Producers: Bob Mould, Lou Giordano. Engineers: Timothy Powell, Jim Wilson, Wally Fleming. Includes liner notes by Greg Kot. Over the course of their first three albums, Sugar released a number of singles, some featuring new studio tracks, some with live versions and covers. BESIDES is an odds-and-ends collection of those tracks. The first three songs, all of which appeared on the band's debut "Helpless" single, are by themselves enough to justify owning this disc. "Needle Hits E" is one of Bob Mould's finest creations, a glittering pop masterpiece that set the tone for Sugar's career. "If I Can't Change Your Mind" (appearing here in a newer improved version to that on the band's debut), and "Try Again," which bridge the gap between Mould's BLACK SHEETS OF RAIN album and Sugar's subsequent BEASTER record, both compete with glorious peals of feedback. Also noteworthy are the crunching pop splendor of "Going Home," and a live version of "The Slim" even more harrowing than its studio counterpart. Collectors should note that early versions of the CD included a second disc featuring a 68-minute live show recorded in Minneapolis. BESIDES is an essential purchase for Mould fans.
