Movie Description H.C. Potter directs this romantic and tragic adventure set against the ever-contemporary troubles in Ireland. This time Hollywood chronicles how peace was made between the Irish and the British in 1921. Merle Oberon plays Helen Drummond, a perfectly majestic British beauty who reveals a fiery, passionate side when she falls in love with Dennis Riordan (Brian Aherne), the smooth leader of the Irish rebellion. To make matters worse, Helen's father is a British conciliator. Even so, their star-crossed love manages to facilitate an armistice in which Representatives from each nation meet in London to discuss a settlement.Unfortunately an insolent faction makes Dennis Riordan a marked man within his own party, and on his return home to Dublin, he pays the consequences for his popularity. Gregg Toland's black and white cinematography is equally sparse and lush, and Merle Oberon and Dennis Riordan have true chemistry in which her loveliness is illuminated by his ease.
